What does wellness look like?

What is wellness?

According to the Oxford dictionary, wellness is "the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal." I'll be that you think wellness also means being in good physical health by managing your weight and eating healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables. What if I told you that wellness should come in a more holistic approach? Wellness is more than just being in good health. "Wellness is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." – The World Health Organization.

What does wellness mean for you?

I can't answer that question for you- only you know what that answer is. Wellness is different for everyone. But there are some common factors to how we get there. Wellness looks like finding a healthy balance between the eight interdependent dimensions of wellness. That balance can be different for each of us. Some of us need more from occupational fulfillment than social interactions or spiritual health than financial balance. Each of us needs to find, within these eight dimensions, what makes us feel whole and alive and strive to maintain that as best we can.

Why do we strive for balance?

When I feel out of balance and alignment- things don't seem to go right in my life. I also feel irritated and anxious. In future posts, I will go into more detail about the wellness wheel and how you can use it to help you find and maintain a more balanced life.
